Is Temp Work Right for You?
There’s no question that the world around us has changed. We don’t know if the way we live and the way we work will ever be the same as it was pre-pandemic. As we get closer and closer to our “new normal,” new opportunities present themselves and we all benefit from exploring more.
“Temp work” is a term that defines work that’s on a part time or full time basis, but with a set beginning and end. It might be a year or it might be a couple hours. It’s an opportunity to learn a new skill or build your resume, as well as earn money. While this has not changed, people who are taking advantage of temporary work opportunities has.
Veterans returning from active service might find themselves with time before they start their next position and a temporary position might be just the right fit. It helps ease the transition back into civilian life.
Retirees find themselves with a lifelong career or service but now that they are not working full time, they have a lot of time on their hands and a lot of skills to offer. Moms who took time off from their careers to raise children have more time when their kids reach the age to start school. And, newly graduated students from high school or college might not have pinpointed exactly what they want to do career-wise and have time before their first position starts.
There are many reasons why temporary positions make sense. Maybe you find yourself in between jobs and just need a break. Temp positions help bridge the gap until the next role starts, providing not only extra income but also extra training and skills. It’s also a chance to network and figure out what you might like to do best (and what you might not like to do).
